'Hyundai Mobis’ : "Crab Driving"
During the media presentation of 'CES
2023'(='The Consumer Electronics Show 2023') in Las Vegas this week, 'Hyundai
Mobis’ future concept car demonstrated the crab driving of M Vision TO, as the
wheels turned 90 degrees to move sideways without the car's body turning.
The company also presented a video of how the free-moving wheels can be applied to an existing vehicle with Hyundai Motor’s "Ioniq 5", demonstrating crab driving as well as 'zero turn' and 'pivot turn' on the screen.
As the demo shows, the test model
Ioniq 5 can drive completely sideways at 90 degrees, known as crab walking.
With the e-Corner System, the Ioniq 5 can also drive diagonally, rotate its
back wheels for pivot turning, and can completely turn 360 degrees in place.
That’s a lot more mobility than we’ve
seen with other carmakers experimenting with crab walking technology. The
e-Corner System essentially adds another dimension to how cars can drive.
All these functions could help out in
cities with narrow streets or tight turns, but it would definitely be easy and
safe when it comes to parking in tight city spaces.
